Bringing lunch from home saves over $1200 per year. And that's if you spend a mere $5 per day.
Not having a regular job means I’m no longer one block away from at least eight restaurants, five coffee shops, and two convenience stores. Eating out now requires me to get into the car and find a spot to eat…then elbow my way in between stay-at-home moms and construction workers. Plus it requires money, which is in short supply. Needless to say, I’ve suddenly become much more committed to “bringing” my mid-day meal to work.
The routine looks like this: I get super hungry. Realize it’s way past lunch time. Head to the “breakroom” (a.k.a., kitchen), dig around the fridge for anything that looks edible and/or appetizing, and plop it all on a plate. I heat, stir, heat and stir and heat again. Then I head back to my desk, plate and beverage in hand…and take bites between typing or web browsing.
Sound familiar? Because it is. It’s exactly the same thing we all do…except now it’s not a communal fridge. No more dodging the girl whose salad dressing I always seem to borrow. No more wondering if that frozen Kashi meal is mine or someone else’s. There’s never a wait for the microwave. Toasting my bagel doesn’t violate the fire code. Plus, I can satisfy my cravings for things like freshly-sauteed home fries and cold steak without thinking twice – even though I’d planned on eating leftover pizza.
Seriously. Bringing my lunch has never been so easy.
